Dr. Dave Mayo, a native of Sulphur Springs, Texas, earned his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in 1996 and taught geology at California State University, Los Angeles before coming to UAFS in 2011. Dr. Mayo’s research and publications are in the areas of petrology, geochemistry, structural geology, and geoscience education. He has directed or co-directed three National Science Foundation grants and is past chair of the Geoscience Education Division of the Geological Society of America. In 2016, Dr Mayo and colleagues launched a new Bachelor of Science program in geoscience at UAFS. By spring 2024, the program had grown to more than 60 geoscience majors, and 25 of alumni were either employed as professional geoscientists or continuing their education with full funding at graduate schools around the country.
