Vocal Performance Workshop students from the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith will entertain local audiences on April 3 with “Broadway: Our Favorite Things,” a series of vignettes performed revue-style.

This free event will begin at 7:30 p.m. at The Blue Lion at UAFS Downtown, 101 N. 2nd St.

Directing the workshop will be George Mann of Fort Smith, UAFS adjunct professor of music appreciation, who described the planned program as “highly eclectic in nature and presentation.” He said most of the pieces were selected or suggested by the students themselves, inspiring the title for the program.

Fresh from a successful and unique presentation of a Mozart dinner theater last fall, the students turned their efforts this semester back to a series of Broadway-style vignettes. The presentation of this semester’s efforts will produce a program that revolves around popular Broadway musicals -- such as “Chicago,” “Hairspray” and “Les Miserables” -- with selections from “Phantom of the Opera,” Sondheim’s “Into the Woods,” “Spamalot,” and even an aria from Douglas Moore’s 20th century opera “The Ballad of Baby Doe.”

Of the content of the program, Mann said, “Because so many of the selections are from the students’ own personal favorites, a great deal of effort and love has been poured into the preparation of this workshop.”

Mann said the performance should please the tastes of most any seasoned theater-goer.

“And because some numbers also include light choreography, there will be something guaranteed to engage even those who have no theater experience,” he said. “Serious, light, tragic, silly -- all moods and emotions will be represented.”
