A documentary by a local artist on trees of Arkansas will be shown at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith at 6 p.m. Dec. 6, with a book signing and reception to be held after.
Linda Palmer’s documentary “Champion Trees of Arkansas” will be shown in the theatre of Windgate Art & Design, the university’s state-of-the-art visual arts facility located at 535 N. Waldron Road. In addition to the film, Palmer has also published a book by the same name that will be on sale afterwards. The event is sponsored by the Chancellor’s Coalition for the Visual Arts.
Additionally, artwork from Palmer’s exhibit, “Arkansas Champion Trees: An Artist’s Journey,” will be on display in the Bob and Nadine Miller Prefunction Gallery outside the theatre.
The documentary, book and exhibit chronicle Palmer’s journey across the state to photograph and draw large-scale portraits of the state’s largest examples of each species of tree. Collecting oral histories and keeping a journal of her travels led Palmer to publish a book on the experiences and eventually film a documentary with Arkansas Educational Television Network.
Palmer is a prominent artist in Arkansas, having opened her first art studio and gallery in Fort Smith in 1985 before moving to Hot Springs, where she currently owns and manages a gallery and studio. She earned a degree in music before returning to study art at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith when it was Westark Community College. Her artwork has been chosen for numerous competitive exhibits and is in permanent collections across the country and the world.
