The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith’s Campus Activities Board will host a Sensory Room Saturday, March 7, from 5-7p.m. in Baldor Room 101. The event is dedicated to providing a therapeutic safe space for students with special needs and everyone is open to join.
“We are putting on this event to let people with disabilities in this community know that we care and want you to be involved as well,” said Elisabeth Jones, UAFS student and member of the Campus Activity Board.
Sensory Rooms are therapeutic safe spaces for children with autism and other special educational needs. It gives children the freedom to explore a relaxing environment while stimulating the senses.
“The sensory room is full of fun toys to help you relax; from fidget spinners to kinetic sand we will also have coloring pages and soft music to enjoy,” said Jones.
The event will feature activities ranging from kinetic sand, light toys, glow sticks, stress balls, water beads, fake snow and bottled lava lamps. There will be light snacks served as well.
“We are really hoping people will learn that people with disabilities are just like the rest of us,” added Jones.
