Health Sciences Student Organizations

UAFS offers many opportunities for you to learn beyond the classroom. Joining a student organization empowers you to make a difference in your life and the life of your university. You have more than 100 student organizations to choose from at UAFS, including several that relate directly to your career field of choice.

Lambda Nu

Lambda Nu is the national honor society for radiologic and imaging sciences. The purpose of the Lambda Nu honor society is to:

  • Provide a mechanism to formally recognize academic achievement
  • Establish a nationally recognized society similar to those of other professions that will function on a national level with goals such as funding students to national meetings, providing scholarships for advanced degrees, and offering a forum for student research

The objectives of Lambda Nu are to:

  • Foster academic scholarship at the highest academic levels
  • Promote research and investigation in the radiologic and imaging sciences
  • Recognize exemplary scholarship

To be selected as a candidate for membership into Lambda Nu is a prestigious honor. Only those students meeting the national and chapter eligibility criteria are invited to join.

Radiography Student Association (RSA)

Membership in the Radiography Student Association (RSA) is limited to students enrolled in the Radiography program. The RSA is recognized as an official club at the UA Fort Smith. RSA activities include monthly meetings for planning and organizing social functions, fundraising, and community service projects.

Each year the RSA raises funds to help support the annual trip to the Arkansas State Radiologic Technologist Conference in the spring. There, students participate in academic competitions with other radiography programs in Arkansas.

Student American Dental Hygienists' Association (SADHA)

Students are expected to become members of their professional organizations. The UA Fort Smith Student American Dental Hygienists’ Association (SADHA) is our student organization and is the student component of the Arkansas Dental Hygienists' Association and the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. Membership is limited to students enrolled in the dental hygiene program. Being a member of your professional organization shows a commitment to the profession of dental hygiene and the goals to which it aspires.

There are many rewards of membership. Students receive two publications: Journal of Dental Hygiene and Access magazine which allow you to keep up with your chosen profession. In addition, when you graduate, there are other benefits such as low rates on loans, insurance, car rentals, self-study courses for continuing education, and Visa/Master card programs. Your professional organization lobbies for your best interests and fights against any threats to the profession of dental hygiene.

Surgical Technology Student Association (STSA)

To act as an advocate for Surgical Technology students to enhance the role of the student, the health of the public in its medical community, and education environments in the community through education, action, and service.

Full membership is for currently registered students in the Surgical Technology Program. Students enrolled in pre-requisite Surgical Technology courses with a declared major in Surgical Technology may join as an associate member without voting privileges.

Student Nurses Association (SNA)

Membership in a professional organization is an expectation of the Nursing Profession and is an integral part of promoting a nurse's career. The UAFS Student Nurse Association is a voluntary organization committed to fostering the professional development of nursing students.

The UAFS Student Nurse Association is a constituent of the Arkansas Nursing Students Association, Inc and the National Student Nurses Association, Inc. Membership is open to students enrolled in a UAFS program leading to licensure as a Registered Nurse.

There are many benefits to membership including access to the professional magazine for student nurses, discounts on study tools, discounts on the annual and midyear conference registration fees, professional networking, and future career prospects.

Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED)

This pre-health professional honor society is open to all students planning to apply to professional schools in medicine, veterinary medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, and other health-related professions. The organization focuses on preparation for admission to these schools.

Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPMS)

The mission of this organization is to provide undergraduate students at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith the opportunity to make connections with the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapter located at the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine in order to help increase diversity within the medical field. Through these opportunities, including that of personal statement workshops, one-on-one mentorship with current medical students, and MCAT preparation, students  build personal development skills that  allow for their continuation into post-graduate studies. The organization also seeks to give back to the community through various volunteer opportunities in order to further members' passion to help others.

Pre-Student Osteopathic Medical Association (PSOMA)

Pre-SOMA is meant to educate  students at UAFS and the surrounding area about osteopathic medicine. Members are provided with connections to the medical community, allowing them support during the process of applying to medical schools or other health professional programs.
